Best time to visit Nagaland

The best time to visit Nagaland is during the winter months, specifically from November to February. This period is considered the most favorable for tourists due to the following reasons:

1. Pleasant Weather: Nagaland experiences a milder climate during the winter, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 24°C (45°F to 75°F). This comfortable weather allows for enjoyable outdoor activities and sightseeing without the discomfort of extreme heat or cold.

2. Festival Season: Many of Nagaland's vibrant festivals, including the famous Hornbill Festival, occur during the winter months. These festivals provide an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in Naga culture, witness traditional dances, taste local cuisine, and interact with the indigenous communities.

3. Clear Skies: Winter skies in Nagaland are often clear, offering stunning views of the lush landscapes, hills, and valleys. It's an ideal time for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of the region.

4. Minimal Rainfall: The winter months see relatively low rainfall, reducing the chances of disrupted travel plans due to heavy rains or landslides.

While winter is the most popular time to visit Nagaland, it's essential to note that accommodation and travel arrangements can get crowded during the festival season. Therefore, it's advisable to make reservations well in advance if you plan to visit during this period. Additionally, if you prefer a quieter and less crowded experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is still pleasant. However, keep in mind that some attractions and festivals may not be available during these times.

Itinerary

Day 1: Dimapur

- On the first day, after arriving in Dimapur, check in to your Hotel and start exploring the city with our guide. Dimapur has several attractions, such as the Medieval Ruins of the Kachari Kingdom, which offer a glimpse into the region's historical heritage. Consider exploring the local markets and trying out Naga cuisine at food stalls. Hong Kong Market is a notable market in Dimapur, though it may be closed on Sundays.

- Optional visit to the Rangapahar Reserve Forest, where you can enjoy some nature and possibly spot wildlife.

Day 2: Khonoma

 Khonoma is a picturesque village located around a 3-3.5-hour drive from Dimapur. The journey itself offers beautiful views of the mountainous terrain and rice terraces of Nagaland. Upon reaching Khonoma, be prepared for some walking as the village is best explored on foot. One of the main attractions in Khonoma is the historical forts where the last battle against the British took place. These forts offer a glimpse into the region's rich history. As you walk through Khonoma's village streets, you'll encounter cobbled pathways, traditional wooden houses adorned with flowering gardens, and friendly locals, including children playing and women engaged in local crafts like weaving. The rice terraces of Khonoma provide a stunning backdrop to the village. Take some time to relax by the terraces and appreciate the natural beauty. Don't miss the Heritage Museum, where you can see the tools and weapons used by Naga warriors. The museum also houses a café called Uku Café, where you can enjoy delicious samosas and other vegetarian dishes. Consider hiring a local guide for the day to enhance your experience and learn more about Khonoma's culture and history.

Day 3: Dzuleke

Dzuleke is a small village known for its tranquility and is often referred to as the "undisturbed village." It's located about 1-1.5 hours from Khonoma. The journey to Dzuleke itself is scenic, with opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty of Nagaland. Dzuleke offers a chance to experience the remote charm of village life. With only around 32 households and 156 residents, it provides a stark contrast to urban living. You can explore jungle trails and walk through paddy fields, immersing yourself in the serene surroundings. Interact with the local community to gain insights into their traditional way of life and culture.

Day 4: Hornbill Festival in Kigwema

- The Hornbill Festival is one of the main highlights of your Nagaland trip, and Kigwema village is one of the nearest places to stay for the festival. Travel from Dzuleke to Kigwema, which takes approximately 2.5 hours by car. The Hornbill Festival, held at Kisama Heritage Village, is a celebration of Naga culture and heritage. It features 16 major tribes, each with its own Morung (dormitory) showcasing tribal specialties. At the festival, you can immerse yourself in Naga culture by tasting tribal cuisine, watching traditional dances, and admiring the colorful tribal attire adorned with weapons and shields. There are various cultural events, including wrestling matches, dance performances, and opportunities to purchase Naga handicrafts. The energy and vibrancy of the Hornbill Festival are truly unique and make for an unforgettable experience.

Day 5: Kohima

Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland, is known for its natural beauty and historical significance. If you're coming from Kigwema, make a stop at Kohima Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Asia, and appreciate its architectural grandeur. Once you've checked in at your accommodation in Kohima, you can head to the World War II Memorial. This memorial honors the soldiers and officers who fought during the victorious battle against the Japanese. Optionally, you can visit the Kohima Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts related to the various tribes of the region.

Day 6: Back to Dimapur

- On your last day, you'll travel back to Dimapur, which serves as the departure point for many travelers leaving Nagaland. This day can be a good opportunity for any last-minute shopping or exploration in Dimapur, depending on your flight or travel schedule.

POINT TO NOTE : The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland typically takes place from December 1st to December 10th each year. Keep in mind that these dates are subject to change, so it's a good idea to confirm the exact dates for the Hornbill Festival for the year you plan to visit Nagaland. If you are going during the festival, Tripsee advises to spend at least 2 nights in Kigwema, to get the actual vibe of the festival.

1. Transport cost, where availing local/ govt vehicles are mandatory (e.g. Jungle safari, visiting to border locations, availing horses or mules for specific sightseeing spots, boat rides etc.) in these cases the tourist has to pay on actuals as necessary
2. Extra / special food (beverages) ordered during or outside any meal under tour package
3. Entry fees & parking fees to any sightseeing spot
4. During unforeseen natural events (e.g. landslides, roadblocks due to snowfall, floods, cancellation of flight / railways etc.) the guest might have to pay extra amount to avail immediate and necessary services as applicable. Tripsee will provide all support to ensure guest’s safety, security and best interest during such events.
