Yumthang Valley is a famous valley in North Sikkim (Lat : 27.81597, Long : 88.7024) which lies 140 kms north of Gangtok. Lachung provides the base for the exploration of Yumthang, the valley of flowers. It is situated at an altitude of 11800 ft which is in close proximity to Tibet. It is used to be known as one of the unique places where the tree line ends. Rhododendron and primula bloom mainly covers the whole area in a surreal shade.

It also offers a view of a stunning array of peaks with Pauhunri and Shundu Tsenpa. A number of hot springs are scattered in the valley providing an opportunity to feel the warmth of the water even in freezing temperatures. The medicinal value of natural hot-springs in curing various ailments had been felt worldwide. If you are lucky enough, you might even have a sight of Snow Leopard and Red Panda around the area.Lachen is a tribal village and is ruled by tribal self-government, the Dzumsa. The focal point of all village activity is the Lachen monastery located in the upper section of the village. A good number of villagers are still yak herders and keep migrating with their herd.

Points to note: 

Important points that a traveler should know before travelling:

  • Carry some dry fruits to keep you energized, as food may be scarce en-route.
  • Take ample rests at every night stop
  • Keep necessary medicines handy to avoid altitude sickness

Quick itinerary: 7 days 6 nights

After reaching Bagdogra we will drive to Gangtok , in Gangtok there will be some sigh seeing and night stay. Next day we will head towards Tsomgo Lake and will return back to Gangtok.Next our destination will be Lachung and from there towards Yumthang Valley and back to Lachung. From Lachung will come back to Gangtok and head towards Jalpaiguri / Bagdogra

Trek Details

Day 1: Bagdogra to Gangtok (5 hrs drive / 127 kms / 1676 m) - On arrival we will take ~5 hours journey to the Land of the Pristine and unspoilt natural beauty – Sikkim, with alpine landscapes and thick luxuriant forests, rivers, torrents and peaceful lakes. Arrive at Gangtok. Then Check-in at Hotel and take rest for the day.

Day 2: Full day Gangtok 7 point sightseeing - Today mainly we will have sight-seeing around Gangtok like ropewaytour, Chorten Stupa, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Ganesh Tok, Banjhakri waterfall, Tashi View point. Overnight stay at Gangtok hotel.

Day 3: Excursion to Tsomgo Lake (2.5 hrs. /40 km / 3753 m) - Today will befull day Excursion. After early breakfast we will proceed towards Tsomgo Lake 3,753 m (12,313 ft.), a 40 km drive which takes around 2.5 hrs. This lake is located very close to Nathula Pass which is the entry point to China termed as the “Silk Route” & remains frozen for most parts of the year. Legend has it that the Lamas use to forecast the future by studying the color of the lakes waters. Enjoy the surroundings, majestic snowy peaks which feed the lake and the clean fresh air. We will be back to Gangtok by 3pm for a late lunch. Evening free for leisure.Overnight stay at Gangtok

Day 04: Gangtok – Lachung (4 hr / 103 km / 2700 m) - After breakfast we will leave for Lachen Monastery and drive back to Chungthang and visit the Holy Rock. Tea & snacks will be served at Chungthang. Move to Lachung where you come across some beautiful waterfalls. Night halt in Lachung.

Day 05: Lachung – Yumthang (3564 m / 1.5 hr / 23 km) – back to Lachung

After breakfast We will  leave for Yumthang Valley (The Ultimate Paradise). Lush green valleys and high peaked mountains covers all around. In April/May/June the valley is struck by the riots of colors with Rhododendron, Alpine & Primula flowers. Yumthang is famous  for its Hot Spring, which is rich in sulphur. In Nov/Dec/Jan one can enjoy the scenic and the panoramic views of the valleys and surrounding mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks. Leave Yumthang and move to Lachung for lunch at 2 pm. After lunch visit Lachung Monastery, Cottage Industry & Waterfall. Night halt at Lachung.

Day 06: Lachung – Gangtok (4 hr / 103km / 2700 m)

Wake up early and  after breakfast leave for Gangtok. On the way if the weather is clear might get to see Mighty Kangchenjonga from Singhik. Had your lunch on the way. After lunch visit Phodong Monastery on the way to Gangtok and then finally will driver back to Gangtok.

Day 07: Gangtok – New Jalpaiguri/Bagdogra tour concludes.

Transportation:From Kathmandu, take the one hour flight to Bhadrapur (the nearest Nepalese airport to Darjeeling, Sikkim and Kalimpong. Drive to Kakarvitta (Nepal/Indian boarder 34km), to Silguri (36km) and to Sikkim – 127 km (5 hours). The nearest airport in India is Bagdogra, where schedule flights operate from New Delhi, Calcutta and Guwahati. The nearest rail heads are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri (88km) which are connected to Calcutta, New Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities in India.
